In this brick entry area, I tried to achieve a formal appearance. Notice the triangular pediment with a herringbone inset.
This portico was built twice. The plans specified the entire portico to be three feet higher than it is now.
After the portico area was completed, including the brick work, beam work, roofing and paint, the homeowner looked at it for a long time, then stated he was not happy with the height. That next day the entire roof structure and half of the columns were demolished. I was able to salvage most of the brick and re-build what is now the top half of the columns. I agree that it was the right architectural decision, and the end result is balanced.
Imagine this portico three feet higher than it is now.
